Good Grief.

I think there should be a law about being this aggravated before 8 am and not having any coffee.

UGH.  Almost Teenagers.

As I’m sure everyone knows, the east coast and midwest have been practically shut down because of the blizzard and crazy amounts of snow and ice and seriously cold weather.  Here, in southern California we’ve been fortunate enough to have some pretty nice weather.  We did have some crazy wind yesterday, but overall its been beautiful.  Although it has been pretty chilly at night… getting into the high 30’s or 40’s.

So, on Tuesday when my Almost-Teenager came in from taking care of the dog she was “freezing” because all she was wearing was a t-shirt and a hoodie sweatshirt jacket.  And naturally she “Didn’t have time” to put anything else on under the hoodie.

Oh, and it was my fault she was cold since I hadn’t gotten to washing her “warmer hoodie” yet.

Yesterday. Same thing. To me, if I had been freezing the day before, I might put on an extra layer or maybe check to see what the weather was like.   I did make her put on an extra layer before we left to take hubby to the airport despite her pleading that she didn’t have time. It may have been 47 degrees when we left, but it was REALLY windy and felt a lot colder.

Which brings me to this morning. Yeesh. Two days of being cold- and what does she do? Puts on a t-shirt under the hoodie. It’s actually only 37 degrees this morning. (but the wind has died down).  It’s COLD.

I make her put another layer on again, despite her protests of “I’m hot by the end of the day!” That is why you have layers- so you can take them off!  Or maybe if you didn’t wear the hoodie ALL.THE.LIVELONG.DAY.  And I told her she had to wear her coat.

“Which one?” she says.Seriously? You only have one coat.

Which I’m assuming she now doesn’t like. Whatever.  She almost burst into tears telling me how it did even make her warm (when she was cold) when she tried it on in the store.

Good grief.

And I guess just to irritate me more, she came in from her dog duties swearing that it wasnt cold. yes, the wind had stopped, but it’s still cold.  I guess I should have just made her wear the coat, but I didn’t care any more and it really wasnt worth fighting about since she was on the verge of being late.

Is it wrong of me to want her to be cold?

So explain this one to me…

This is the second time in as many weeks that I have caught her “Forgetting” to brush her teeth.  I can’t even imagine how many times she hasn’t done it before I caught her.

YUCK. I know that once in a very long while, I do something that throws off my routine and I forget to brush. It happens, I get that. But I don’t think this is one of those times.  I don’t get it.

I honestly believe that she was running 10 minutes late and she decided that she didn’t have time to brush.  That’s what her story was the last time I busted her.

Which prompted a “Basic hygiene” lesson. Things you do no matter what(in no particular order); that come BEFORE spending 20-30 minutes on your hair.

1.Shower/wash hair   2. Wear deodorant  3. Brush your teeth  4. Wash your face 5. Wash your hands after going to the bathroom.

I don’t think it’s too much to ask of her. I don’t want her to turn into the smelly chick with the gross teeth.

Oh well… maybe tomorrow she will think about it

I’m feeling better now that I’ve vented and had some coffee.

Wishing you a terrific Thursday!

What a glorious day!

You would never know by looking outside today that it is the middle of January!

It is just glorious! There is no better word for it. The sky is vibrant blue! The sun is shining! There isn’t a cloud to be seen! Oh, and did I mention that it’s 84 degrees!?!?

These are the days that make it worth living in Southern California. It would have been a great day to go to the beach.

Inspired by this wonderful day, we took a family walk this afternoon.  The dog too!

The blue sky through the pine trees

A poofy dandelion in our yard

Our refreshments

An iris before the Toddler took it! she wore it in her hair on the way home.

Pretty flowers around the fire hydrant.

Me and the dog.

I hope your day was glorious too!

What’s on my mind… Thursday afternoon edition

2:41pm

The cranky toddler is FINALLY napping, I have about an hour before we have to hike to the bus stop to pick up K. What shall I do, what shall I do?

Obviously, I picked that I would write a little something.

But what to write about?

I’ve been thinking about a lot of stuff today.

Its September all of a sudden. Christmas is coming. Old friends. Bills. Money. a budget. My husband. My brother in law’s crazy baby mama. Bills. Money. a Budget. Christmas is coming. Old friends. Money. bills. A budget.

Yes, I guess money and bills and a budget have been the majority of my thinking today. I should not have to be the sole responsible party for our finances, I am really not any good at it. Really. I’m not. Every time I get things in a good place, we start getting a little ahead. I somehow manage to screw it all up. Hubby has been saying for months that we are going to do it together and he’ll help.. but here I am still doing it myself.  I give him a partial pass, since he was in the great white north for 2 months. But before that, we got as far as I told him what the bills were. woo. We need to sit down and figure out an actual budget. An actual budget that will help us not live paycheck to paycheck.

An actual budget where at some point we can get to a point where I can just go get a pedicure or a haircut and not have to worry… or that we can go get him the glasses he needs.

I hate money.

The good news I guess, is that we have the truck more than half paid off now. Only 26 payments left! Woo. I think we need to have a party the day that happens. Things would be SO much better if we didn’t have that giant payment to worry about every month. Life without a car payment is just a distant memory… but starting to become a glimmer in my eye again… well, in 26 months anyway.

Really, overall we could have so much more debt. I guess (if you don’t count the truck) we are below average for what most people have in debt (so “they” say).  We just have to find a way to cut back and pay things off.

Sigh.

We have almost no money until he gets paid next friday. Seriously. The paycheck the rent comes out of is always makes it a lean two weeks, but I think this is the worst one to date. It was a combination of not enough hours on the check, spending too much moolah when we went to the beach last weekend, and really getting used to hubby being at home again.

We are back to putting gas into 2 vehicles, and when he travels he gets money from the company to eat. Normally we actually end up with a little extra money, but this Alaska thing was different from the normal travel money they got. He only got $30 a day to eat, and they had already made their accommodation arrangements, so him being there actually ended up costing  us money.

Okay, enough belly aching about our finances. I figured out what our bills are for September, and hubby and I are sitting down this weekend and figuring out a budget, No exceptions! 🙂

Hmmmm…. What else?

I caught up with my old roommate from college today. That was nice. I miss her. I haven’t seen her in… gosh…. since her wedding I think. Which was in/around 1997. Until we had talked back in April, we hadn’t talked on the phone in about 10 years! Its way too long!  That was definitely a good part of today.

I am without a vehicle today too… not a super bad part, but not super fantastic. It just means that I have to walk to pick up K at the bus stop, and its about 100+  today. Yuck. Hubby & Brother In law had to leave for work at 4 this morning. (BIL was here because he had an appointment out our way, and they decided it would just be easier for him to spend the night since they had to be up so early.)  BIL used hubby’s truck to go to his appointment. When they went to leave at 4am, hubby’s truck had a flat. I was awakened at 4 by:

“Babe, he got me a flat tire, I need to take your truck.”

Sure… fine.. I don’t need to go anywhere I couldn’t walk to.  And I really didn’t care since I was asleep.

I did promise myself I was going to walk K to the bus three days this week.It gives me a good excuse to actually have to do it!  I just hope the bus is on time, and not half an hour late like I was yesterday! The kids get out of school at 3:30- the bus didn’t show up there to pick them up until almost 4! She didn’t get off the bus until 4:15! I will not be happy if I have to stand in the heat waiting that long.

Oh what else…

The baby mama drama.

First a little back ground on this one- My brother in law’s ex-girlfriend & baby mama has 2.5 kids. She has a 12-year-old girl “T”(from a previous boy friend) my nephew “D”with my Brother in law and a bun in the oven with her new husband.

My BIL is the only dad my niece has ever really known(she has never actually met her real dad). He’s been her dad since she was in Kindergarten. He pays child support for her when he clearly doesnt have to.  He loves her like his own, we all do. She’s my niece plain and simple.

Anyway- it seems that a couple of months ago they found a rabbit. T fell in love with it and they decided to keep it. I guess she hasn’t been taking care of it as BabyMama would like. While T was at school yesterday BabyMama took the rabbit to an animal hospital and said “I found this” and gave it to them.

T was devastated to say the least. BIL said that she was clearly in pain, and crying that she lost her “daughter.”  and that she “never wanted to be happy again.”  Yes, she is 12, she can be dramatic, but he said this was different.

Long story short, he called BabyMama and said “go get it, or tell me where it is.” She told him. His new girlfriend offered to go pick the rabbit up. (the kids and New girlfriend live in Las Vegas). Bunny is rescued, T is relieved, BIL now has to figure out how he’s going to deal with this rabbit once he gets it back here to CA, and BabyMama is furious. Not only for him rescuing the bunny, but for getting new girlfriend involved.

It’s really this whole huge crazy, Jerry Springer thing. I will have to explain my BIL’s crazy life sometime. he totally could be on Springer.  I think BabyMama should think about the silver lining; She got the rabbit out of her house and now its BIL’s problem. I think that would be a bright spot.

For the record, in my mind the jury is still out on whether he really “did the right thing” or not. I think she could have made a better choice on how to “punish” T’s lack of care… I think that she just wanted it gone and just decided to get rid of it and used that as an excuse. Even so, his overriding her decision may or may not have been a good move. I’m not sure.

Oh well… It is time to gather the juice, water, and get the sleeping toddler into the stroller to hoof it to the bus stop.

Please oh please don’t let it be too late.

Yes, I survived the beach

I have seriously sat down and tried to write about our beach adventure at least 3 different times now. It all keeps turning into this hugely detailed really long ramble about our weekend.  I don’t think anyone really wants to know THAT much about the weekend. 🙂

We all ended up having a good time.

Screaming toddler and all. 🙂

We spent a while in traffic getting there, and getting the key to my Brother-in-law’s apartment was an adventure unto itself… but we at least had somewhere to pee and bathe.

an interesting commentary on my Brother-in-law

Oh, and when i say apartment, I really mean glorified closet. Its teeny tiny. It has a tiny sink, a tiny shower and a tiny stove. The funniest part is my Brother in law is far from a tiny guy! But it’s across the street from the beach, and he loves it.

the tiny sink

It turned out the be a beautiful day. It was only probably at most 75, cooler with the wind. There weren’t a ton of people there, which made it so much better. If the heatwave wasn’t over, it would have been a whole other story.

headed to the beach from my brother in law's apartment, the beach is on the other side of that wall across the street

my handy pink tent/sunshade

I picked up this sunshade on clearance at Target probably 6 years ago. Its small, but it a great place to hide from the sun, to read or for toddlers to nap.

Some gulls before KT chased them away

We also saw a bunch of Brown Pelicans diving into the water to catch their food. It was pretty incredible! I could have sat and watched them all day. It was hard to get a picture of it, they are fast! And we also saw some random wild parrots.

I have no idea what this is... but its a neat pic

this was supposed to be a picture of a dead stingray, but i seem to have had my finger over the lens

We think hubby got stung by a sting ray while he was in the ocean with K. He thought it was a jellyfish at first, but I don’t think jellyfish can make you bleed like he did.

sea weed!

In the picture below, there are two heads bobbing in the water, that would be hubby and K. I didn’t get in. I am not a fan of not knowing what is underneath me. It freaks me out. KT played in the waves for a while and had a blast. That water was COLD!

This is my fave pic of the day.

These are the kites from all the crazy kite boarders. I didn’t realize that it was really a thing, or that popular. There were a bunch of them, and those kites are HUGE! It was interesting to watch.

the remains of the sand castle after it was stomped on by a toddler

We made a nice little castle. Then it was destroyed by a mighty dragon… also known as the crazy toddler. She had just as much fun destroying it as building it.

another accidental pic that looks kind of neat. This was while we were walking to have dinner

We walked to 2nd street, which is where all the food, shopping and nightlife is. We ended up just going to Subway, since BIL told us to go the wrong way to go to some other restaurant. It was good though. i was starving and it totally hit the spot. On the way back from eating, we also stopped at an old-fashioned candy store. K was in heaven… she got Dr. Pepper flavored jelly bellies. We got K some jelly beans too. They were super pricey but they loved it. And there’s nothing that will shut a toddler up or make her scream like candy!

e

while we were sitting outside Subway eating dinner, a guy asked us to watch his dog while he went inside to get food

That was our day. There was traffic on the way home, and then we stayed up way too late watching weird shows on National Geographic channel.. like “Swamp People” about people who hunt alligators.  It was weird, but interesting.

And needless to say- we ALL slept in on Sunday!

And Sunday was full of laundry and togetherness.

to the beach!

My hubby decided we need to go to the beach today..

woo.

Can you tell how excited I am?

I’m not.

The beach would be a fine place to go except for 2 things, wait make that 3-

1. all the sand- it just gets everywhere.

2. taking the children

3. other people – can be rude or just get in your way

The kids have a great time at the beach. I do not.

My husband has a great time at the beach. I do not.

Chasing a toddler around in the sand is not my idea of a super fantastically fun afternoon. But she LOOOOOVES the beach. Last time we were there she had a blast picking up sea shells. The last time we went last summer she got soaked and then rolled around in the sand. Fun for her- not fun for me to clean her up.

Maybe I have a bad attitude about it. Maybe this time it will be better.

We do have a “base of operations” this time. My brother in law’s apartment is across the street from the beach- literally. I guess if it is too horrible I could go hide there. Make hubby deal with the holy terror that is our toddler all by himself for a while. That would be entertaining to see. He hasn’t really been anywhere in public with her since he’s been back… or since she started screaming at the drop of a hat.

All I would really like to do is just lay/sit there and read. No distractions. That would be nice.

I know this “cheap” trip is inevitably going to cost us more than the nothing hubby claims it will be.  Its 50+ miles each way buddy = gas $!!

In the spirit of family fun I will suck it up and go. We haven’t done anything together in so long.

I will put on my happy “I love the beach” face.

I will spay sunscreen on everyone, more than once.

I will follow the toddler around while she picks up sea shells, and make sure she doesn’t step on or pick up anything icky, painful or decaying.

I will take pictures.

I will probably gawk at passers-by, they can be so entertaining sometimes.

I will hopefully get a break if a small someone takes a nap, as doubtful as that may be with all the excitement.

I will do my best to have a good time.

I will complain/vent about it tomorrow when if I don’t.

So it’s off to the beach for me!

woo. I still don’t sound excited. Do I?

Its hot.

OMG. You’d think after living in Las Vegas for almost 10 years I could handle a little heat. It’s 102 right now, and I’m melting. I’ve turned into such a wimp since we moved to California.

I have errands to run, sand to play in.. And I really don’t want to leave the comfort of my A/C, even though I’m having some cabin fever because we haven’t left the house since the movie Wednesday morning.

I think the dog is melting too.
