Yes, I survived the beach

I have seriously sat down and tried to write about our beach adventure at least 3 different times now. It all keeps turning into this hugely detailed really long ramble about our weekend. ¬†I don’t think anyone really wants to know THAT much about the weekend. ūüôā

We all ended up having a good time.

Screaming toddler and all. ūüôā

We spent a while in traffic getting there, and getting the key to my Brother-in-law’s apartment was an adventure unto itself… but we at least had somewhere to pee and bathe.

an interesting commentary on my Brother-in-law

Oh, and when i say apartment, I really mean glorified closet. Its teeny tiny. It has a tiny sink, a tiny shower and a tiny stove. The funniest part is my Brother in law is far from a tiny guy! But it’s across the street from the beach, and he loves it.

the tiny sink

It turned out the be a beautiful day. It was only probably at most 75, cooler with the wind. There weren’t a ton of people there, which made it so much better. If the heatwave wasn’t over, it would have been a whole other story.

headed to the beach from my brother in law's apartment, the beach is on the other side of that wall across the street

my handy pink tent/sunshade

I picked up this sunshade on clearance at Target probably 6 years ago. Its small, but it a great place to hide from the sun, to read or for toddlers to nap.

Some gulls before KT chased them away

We also saw a bunch of Brown Pelicans diving into the water to catch their food. It was pretty incredible! I could have sat and watched them all day. It was hard to get a picture of it, they are fast! And we also saw some random wild parrots.

I have no idea what this is... but its a neat pic

this was supposed to be a picture of a dead stingray, but i seem to have had my finger over the lens

We think hubby got stung by a sting ray while he was in the ocean with K. He thought it was a jellyfish at first, but I don’t think jellyfish can make you bleed like he did.

sea weed!

In the picture below, there are two heads bobbing in¬†the water, that would be hubby and K. I didn’t get in. I am not a fan of not knowing what is underneath me. It freaks me out. KT played in the waves for a while and had a blast. That water was COLD!

This is my fave pic of the day.

These are the kites from all the crazy kite boarders. I didn’t realize that it was really a thing, or that popular. There were a bunch of them, and those kites are HUGE! It was interesting to watch.

the remains of the sand castle after it was stomped on by a toddler

We made a nice little castle. Then it was destroyed by a mighty dragon… also known as the crazy toddler. She had just as much fun destroying it as building it.

another accidental pic that looks kind of neat. This was while we were walking to have dinner

We walked to 2nd street, which is where all the food, shopping and nightlife is. We ended up just going to Subway, since BIL told us to go the wrong way to go to some other restaurant. It was good though. i was starving and it totally hit the spot. On the way back from eating, we also stopped at an old-fashioned candy store. K was in heaven… she got Dr. Pepper flavored jelly bellies. We got K some jelly beans too. They were super pricey but they loved it. And there’s nothing that will shut a toddler up or make her scream like candy!

while we were sitting outside Subway eating dinner, a guy asked us to watch his dog while he went inside to get food

That was our day. There was traffic on the way home, and then we stayed up way too late watching weird shows on National Geographic channel.. like “Swamp People” about people who hunt alligators. ¬†It was weird, but interesting.

And needless to say- we ALL slept in on Sunday!

And Sunday was full of laundry and togetherness.

to the beach!

My hubby decided we need to go to the beach today..

Can you tell how excited I am?

I’m not.

The beach would be a fine place to go except for 2 things, wait make that 3-

1. all the sand- it just gets everywhere.

2. taking the children

3. other people – can be rude or just get in your way

The kids have a great time at the beach. I do not.

My husband has a great time at the beach. I do not.

Chasing a toddler around in the sand is not my idea of a super fantastically fun afternoon. But she LOOOOOVES the beach. Last time we were there she had a blast picking up sea shells. The last time we went last summer she got soaked and then rolled around in the sand. Fun for her- not fun for me to clean her up.

Maybe I have a bad attitude about it. Maybe this time it will be better.

We do have a “base of operations” this time. My brother in law’s apartment is across the street from the beach- literally. I guess if it is too horrible I could go hide there. Make hubby deal with the holy terror that is our toddler all by himself for a while. That would be entertaining to see. He hasn’t really been anywhere in public with her since he’s been back… or since she started screaming at the drop of a hat.

All I would really like to do is just lay/sit there and read. No distractions. That would be nice.

I know this “cheap” trip is inevitably going to cost us more than the nothing hubby claims it will be.¬†¬†Its 50+ miles each way buddy = gas $!!

In the spirit of family fun I will suck it up and go. We haven’t done anything together in so long.

I will put on my happy “I love the beach” face.

I will spay sunscreen on everyone, more than once.

I will follow the toddler around while she picks up sea shells, and make sure she¬†doesn’t¬†step on or pick up anything icky, painful or decaying.

I will take pictures.

I will probably gawk at passers-by, they can be so entertaining sometimes.

I will hopefully get a break if a small someone takes a nap, as doubtful as that may be with all the excitement.

I will do my best to have a good time.

I will complain/vent about it tomorrow when if I don’t.

So it’s off to the beach for me!

woo. I still don’t sound excited. Do I?

Minions and Schmucks and Noodles! Oh My!

I think we had a pretty okay weekend.

Saturday was fairly uneventful. I slept in until about 1. Which is highly unusual luckily K watched KT so I could sleep. I had another bad night trying to sleep and I had a headache and just couldn’t stay awake. KT woke me up about 10 or so wanting ¬†juice and “Mama ‘m soaking wet! It’s on my legs and feet!” Ugh. So I made a juice run to the kitchen, changed the soggy mess, put on Nick Jr and that’s all I remember until hubby called and woke me up. ¬†After that I found some motivation and actually emptied a few boxes in the garage.

I had been planning on taking the kids to the drive in on Friday night. But I somehow managed to lose the $40 that was going to fund the excursion. Biggest.bonehead.ever. I know it was in my pocket when we were at orientation at school and then it was gone. I probably had my phone (or keys) in that pocket and it fell out when I took the phone out. UGH. Sadly it’s not the first time this has happened. Last time it was $12. ¬†So I felt stupid, ¬†was mad at myself, and was feeling really sad that P couldn’t come home this weekend. I decided that we should just stay home. ¬†So after getting over the sting of losing the money, I decided to go ¬†anyway. We all needed to get out of the house.

After removing the stroller and various randomness from the back of the truck, we filled it with pillows and blankets and such. I ordered a pizza to pick up –¬†can’t beat the Domino’s large one topping with extra cheese for $6.99 carry out special! ¬†(If i had that same pizza delivered it would have cost almost $20.) We got in the truck and away we went! We ran into Fresh & Easy ¬†and got some drinks, popcorn and candy. ¬†Went to the ATM, and then picked up the pizza. Katie saying “I want go to movie theatre!” the whole way!

I had decided that we were going to go see “Despicable Me.” The other option was the Dogs & Cats ¬†movie and I am seriously not sitting through that. Yuck-O. ¬†It was a cute movie, as far a kids movies go. I’ve seen better –¬†I’ve seen worse. The best part was when the minions said “Oh poop.” ¬†KT was really fidgety most of the time and ate a boat load of “Pock-corn” and she couldn’t get enough “Noodles” which in her world are Skittles. I’m not sure why she calls them that, but she does. ¬†I really wanted to stay for the 2nd movie with was “Dinner for Schmucks.” I don’t ever get to go to the movies without the children so I wanted to see it for me. It’s not something I normally would have let K see….We’re usually pretty strict about what we let her watch. But she’s growing up, and she’s really seen a lot more PG-13 movies lately than ever before.

I usually go to kids-in-mind.com to get an idea of what a movie really has in it. They rate the movies from 0-10 on the Sex & nudity, Violence/Gore and Profanity. So all the movies have a rating like 6.5.2. Then they describe all of the incidents in each category. It’s very specific. ¬†They also list discussion topics and the moral of the story. ¬†I think it’s a fantastic site! they also have an iPhone app now!

So Dinner for Schmucks was 6.5.5. (Despicable Me was 2.3.2 in case you were wondering.)¬†It had a little more sexual¬†content¬†than I normally let her see… but it¬†wasn’t¬†really overt, and I’m pretty sure most of it went over her head. At least I hope it did. (fingers crossed!) And she was half asleep through some of it. I liked it. It¬†wasn’t¬†as¬†hilarious¬†as I wanted it to be…. but I don’t think anything will ever be as funny as the Hangover was!

So we got back late, I hoped I could sleep… but that didn’t happen until about 3 or so… read last nights sleepless post here. I think I decided that the noise I heard also could have been a shovel being knocked over… I noticed it was on the ground today and then I knocked it over too. ¬†Who knows. ¬†Lets hope sleep wins one of these nights.

Despite being up until 3, I managed to get up at 9 this morning. Not out of my own free will mind you.. a certain small person was beckoning for me. ¬†I do give myself kudos for staying awake after that! ¬†Yay me! We cleaned up the house a little bit, I took a shower, went to the store for juice and milk. And then we headed to meet my sister at IKEA in Costa Mesa. I have never been to IKEA before. ¬†We had one back in PA, but never¬†actually¬†went. And for some strange reason that no one can figure out: there¬†¬†isn’t¬†one in Las Vegas. ¬†(Vegas also¬†doesn’t¬†have a Chick-fil-a) So this was my first adventure/experience at IKEA.

Traffic was bad, I got lost, and my sister sat there for 45 minutes waiting for us. ¬†We did finally make it! It was insane! I don’t think I’ve ever been to a store where there were just hoards of people walking in, walking out… just everywhere! ¬†I don’t think I’ve ever been in an elevator that will hold 2 strollers and e shopping carts! It was seriously the craziest place I think I’ve ever been.

*If you¬†didn’t¬†catch this on today’s Freshly¬†pressed,¬†here is a very entertaining blog about a trip to IKEA.

KT was making our “shopping list” or scribbling on an order form to stay occupied. But that meant that she dropped the pencil and the catalog she was holding about 150 times. She was pretty good overall. After finding my sister’s “Billy” bookshelf and lots of goodies I¬†wasn’t¬†intending on buying.. (although I did get some cute and¬†inexpensive¬†flower pots for my¬†Hibiscus¬†I bought a few weeks ago.) we headed to the checkout! $27 later we were ready to get some frozen yogurt!

KT +frozen yogurt was definitely interesting. She loves ice cream, but I usually just give her a little bit at a time on a spoon, she’s never really had a cone before. She liked it a bit and then started trying to eat the cone! It turned into quite a drippy mess… then she dropped it in the cup holder in her stroller. Yay. Oh, and she proceeded to finish what was left of my cone at that moment when I tried to clean it up! It¬†was really less messy than I thought it would turn out to be.

After a lovely drive home, with very little traffic. we stopped to wash the truck that was so dirty it was brown and not blue anymore.  I cleaned up a little more, KT got sand in her eye, smashed her finger between the couch and the wall, and we ate some left over pizza for dinner. Now if only I could get her to go to sleep. She is seriously wound up!

I guess I should have posted this last night… but I once I actually got the maniac to go to sleep. I got sidetracked watching the new episode of True Blood and then I had a pounding headache and I actually went to sleep BEFORE 3 Am! ¬†WOOOO HOOOOOO! ¬† if you are keeping track, that is Sleep 1 Bumps in the night 2!

And more interestingly I got up at 9, and was moderately productive! I cleaned my bathroom, tidied up the bedroom, swept & mopped the¬†linoleum in the kitchen/dining area/entry way, and vacuumed the living room. I know its pretty amazing… I think I may be really getting back into the swing of things. Which is just in time since SCHOOL STARTS ON WEDNESDAY! Not that I am excited or anything… ¬†K sure isn’t.

Oh well.. i must go find some lunch to feed a small maniac who is throwing dirty socks at me.  Until next time!

A Wonderfully Wacky Wednesday

Hello Blog day 2. Wow, that is¬†corny.. cheesy… lame-o… I promise to never do that again! ūüôā

I don’t think I mentioned this, but K is at camp this week, so it’s just me and the KT until next Tuesday. ¬†That fact definitely makes life interesting and quite challenging to say the least.

I tried really hard to go to sleep Tuesday night at a decent time. Decent= any time before 2 am. And as in most every night I failed miserably. At 6:45 the garbage truck making a giant ruckus scared the crap out of me. ¬†I tried to go back to sleep, but alas the weather report and the beginning of the Today show sucked me in. ¬†Just as I was dozing off again around 7:30 Miss KT came in and made sure I definitely wasn’t getting to go back to sleep. Oh well, I was planning on getting up at 8 anyway.

I had decided to lose my mind and try to take KT to the movies for the first time. ¬†She’s been to the drive in with us a few times, but there she can be the maniac that she is without irritating everyone else.. ¬†so the movie theater was going to be an interesting experience.

Regal Theaters have their Free Family Film Festival running all summer. Tuesday and Wednesday mornings at 10am they show (sort of old) family movies for FREE! Can’t beat that! Especially with a toddler! And the closest theater is ¬†about 100 feet (okay maybe a little farther) from our house. We could totally walk there. ¬†Check it out! http://www.regmovies.com/nowshowing/familyfilmfestivalschedule.aspx?state=CA

I talked to KT about going to the movie theater and she was very excited! Especially when I mentioned popcorn. ¬†She LOOOOVES “Pock-corn”! ¬†We headed over. Our choices were “Ice Age” or “Stuart Little”. I opted for “Stuart Little” thinking that the talking mice and cats would entertain her. ¬†Now, I realize Ice Age was¬†probably¬†¬†the better way to go.

I decided to get a small “pock-corn” and a diet coke…. which was $12.75!! The small popcorn was seriously $6.00. Highway robbery. But at least I¬†didn’t¬†have to pay to get in. She did pretty good. ¬†She loved the popcorn, and even though¬†the¬†seat kept trying to swallow her, she watched the movie for an entire hour. ¬†After that she started getting really antsy and when she¬†whacked¬†the lady¬†in front¬†of us in the head, I knew it was time to go.

After that we had some lunch, I actually unpacked some boxes (We moved about a month ago, which is a whole ordeal unto itself). ¬†We spent a little time outside playing in the sand, ¬†it was pretty hot so I¬†didn’t¬†want to be out there long. ¬†There was play dough playing, blocks, coloring… and the list goes on and on… she’s a busy busy kid.

Overall it was a god day… We had a nice dinner of Orange Chicken from trader Joe’s (which is REALLY good for frozen!), we had a Skype call with Grandma… and after we got off the call, I realized that I was FREEZING! ¬†The A/C was on, so I didn’t think much of it, until I noticed that it was more than a chill…. I had a fever! So randomly weird!

Its gone now, and I pretty much feel okay now. I could take a nap though…. but only if my little busy-body takes one first!
