“It was AWESOME!”

So, as I’m sure everyone knows, the final installment of the Harry Potter saga premiered in theatres.  My dear Teen is a big fan. She’s read all 7 books, which is more than I can say for myself. I read half of the first one and I was done.  When she moved in with us, she even had a “clope” (6-year-old for Cloak). 🙂

I promised her a long time ago that I would take her to the midnight showing for the last one… as long as the planets aligned properly and I had someone to watch the Maniac. Amazingly enough the planets aligned and my wonderful Hubby is actually home for the weekend.

I decided to not tell her we were going. Which, is a move I am famous for… and honestly, you’d think after all these years she’d catch on. She doesnt.

For the last week or so, I’ve been tormenting her with talk of Harry Potter. She’ll say “I can’t wait to see it!” I say.. “You only get to see it if I let you.”  Stuff like that.. It’s been far too much fun messing with her. And yesterday all she did was talk about the movie. And all we did was shoot her down, telling her she can’t see it until it comes out on DVD. We are so mean, I know.

As luck would have it, she even took a nap in the afternoon, so I didn’t have to spill the beans as early as I planned. I kept it up until the last-minute. We all stayed up late playing the Wii.. Hubby and I got into a 3 point contest on the basketball game.. I kept beating him and he didn’t like that one bit! haha!

A little before 11 I went upstairs to put different pants on.. which was of course when she caught on. I took the tickets and said, “Oh I found this on the floor.” As soon as she realized what they were, she starting jumping up and down! She was sooooooo excited! She didn’t stop talking the whole way there either!

Luckily, the theatre wasnt the zoo I was imagining it would be. I didn’t see any costumes.., just one chick in a Hogwarts scarf.  As far as midnight showings go, it was pretty mellow.

She watched the movie very intently.. clapping and cheering with the crowd. She loved every second. I enjoyed it too actually. Don’t tell her, but I cried a little. 😉 It was much faster paced than the rest of them. I always found the flow of the other movies annoying… you’d think it would end and it would keep going.. and you’d think it would end.. and it’s still going! This one kept my attention the whole time.

On the way home.. she said “That was AWESOME!” about 50 times… so I’m going to go out on a limb and say that she liked it. hahaha!

I’m glad I could make her day. Now she doesn’t know what to do with herself now that HP is finished.

I told her she could start reading Twilight.

Hope you are having a great weekend! I’m going to go get ready for my girls night out! I can’t wait!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Enjoying the Quiet and Some Coffee

It’s a lovely Wednesday morning… I am enjoying some quiet and a cup of coffee before my dear sweet Maniac wakes up.

She was something else yesterday… she was acting like she needed a nap all day long. Whiny, crying at every little thing that didn’t go her way. And even crying at things that went her way. Hopefully today will be better. She’s got a lot going on today!

First, we are headed to story time at the library.  Of course, she has to do her “homework” from last week before we go. They gave her a little sheet to color that had a sandwich on it. (The theme of the day was lunch.) Then we are headed to aMeetUp..which is naturally a MeetUp that only me and my new friend (Who I shall call V.)  are going to, since no one else (out of the 20 people who have joined our group and not come to anything yet) RSVP’d. We are braving the movie theatre to go see Rio! We’ll see how it goes… the Maniac is super excited about the “moo-vee fee-at-er” but I think that’s mostly about the popcorn. I did take her one time last summer.. and she sat through half of it successfully. Maybe she can hang longer this time. We’ll see.

And to make everything ever more fantastic… Hubby isn’t working AGAIN today. UGH. He went in for a while yesterday for a meeting… they swear that he’ll be working Thursday and friday and they have enough work to keep them busy through May.. and then will be in Arizona in June.

Let’s do a little math here…. Last week he worked 3 days. This week he will have worked 2.5 days.  3 days + 2.5 days= not enough money to pay the rent.

We are hoping that he can sweet talk the Payroll lady into giving him a few vacation days early. He boss said it was okay. He gets his new vacation in July, so it’s not that early. Keep your fingers crossed. Otherwise we have to come up with emergency plan B.

The good news is- we got the info in the mail yesterday about renewing our lease and they are not raising the rent! I was a little worried that they were going to. ( the rent was originally about $200 more a month. They lowered it right before we found it.) Thankfully it will remain the same which is a huge relief.

And seriously, how has it been a year since we moved already? CRAZY how time flies!

Oh, and in sad news. I’ve been doing some research. It seems I am going to have to put my dreams of a Cake Pop business on hold for a while. The great lame state of California is not a fan of the in-home bakery business. While, it is not illegal to have one, the Health Department has to approve them and it “rarely” does. What ever.

I did find some commercial kitchen space that you can rent by the hour. I think I’d have to be in a place to make a real huge committment, and have some money to spend.  It’s like $18-$25 an hour, plus a boatload of deposits. And you have to have all your licenses and whatnot… I think I’m going to consider myself in research & development mode and work on my product from my own kitchen and see how it goes.

But I still need to find a way to supplement our income.

Oh well.. I’ll keep looking.

Hmmm.. I think that’s about it for now.  I’m going to finish my coffee, maybe Farmville a little… and if the Maniac is still asleep, I’m going to catch up on some DVR’d shows.. I’m seriously behind!

Have a wonderful Wednesday!

My day of unplugging = almost an epic fail.

So, on  Saturday I tried to unplug for the day. I really did.

After my last post, I actually wrote another quick post for my other blog, and shut off the computer. That part was easy. I did not open my computer again until Sunday morning.

That pesky little computer, otherwise known as my iPhone, in my pocket on the other hand…   was amazingly hard to stay away from.

I did fairly well most of the day.  I did hubby’s laundry, watch the Toddler run around outside for a while… helped her try to ride her bike, blew some bubbles… it was a little chilly, but it was nice. This was while my darling Hubby changed the oil in the truck.  (Yay for fresh oil! And she even got new tires saturday too!)

Anyway- then we decided that we were going to head to the drive in! To see “THE WANGO MOOO-VEEEEE” ! The Toddler was very very excited to go. I put her “in charge” of having Daddy get the pillows and blankets together while I ran to the dollar store for candy and popcorn.. and got some Taco Bell for dinner.

Can I just go off on a tangent about the drive in for a minute? I LOVE the Drive in. It is such a better deal than going to the regular movies- especially with a toddler.  Let’s do the math:

Regular movies: $12 a person x 3 = $36, not including the toddler                    Drive In: $7 a person x 3 =$21 and kids under 5 are FREE! Oh, and did I mention that is for TWO movies? Double Feature! YAY!

Regular Movies: An arm and a leg and your first-born.  Or at least $18 for 2 medium drinks and a large popcorn.                                                                                  Drive In: Bring your own!  I spent $19 at the dollar store for 3 20 oz bottles of soda, a 4 pack of microwave popcorn, fancy popcorn bags to put it in and an abundance of candy.

So, it was definitely the better way to go. We spent $50 for Dinner, two movies and more snacks than we could eat. I think that’s a good deal, and it was fun- once the Toddler fell asleep that is. Oh, and we saw Rango and Red Riding Hood. Rango was eh. Red Riding Hood was pretty good. I think it was trying too hard to be twilighty though. I was really amused by the fact that Red Riding Hood’ s dad was played by Billy Burke who plays Bella’s dad in the Twilight Saga.  🙂

Anyway- back to being unplugged.

We were in the truck on our way to the drive in and my phone dinged that little sound it makes when I get a text. (I knew I should have just shut the phone OFF.)You know the one… you hear it everywhere… any movie or tv show that has iPhones has that sound.  I looked at it.

It was a status update from Facebook from my Brother in law, or his ex girlfriend… I can’t remember which one it was that time. They were having some serious passive-aggressive thing going on about custody of an iPod and silverware and it was all pretty darn hilarious. I don’t know why one didn’t just unfriend the other already. They were blaming each other for being childish, or “putting their shortcomings” on the other… whatever. They were both being pretty childish if you ask me. At least my brother-in-law finally unfriended her yesterday. So now the unfriend-er is asking me about the unfriend-ee’s Facebook posts. So funny. Cracks.me.up!

That was it. That post has me glued back to the screen. I posted a picture of an excited toddler with her “pock-corn” in hand and I was thoroughly plugged in again.

Oh well. I made it a few hours. I guess it wasnt an EPIC FAIL per say…. but it was a FAIL none-the-less.

Next time- I am shutting off the phone.

10 days until Teenagerhood

FINALLY… a napping maniac toddler. I can relax for a little while.

I’m sure I say this every month…

But seriously, How did it get to be February already?

Where, oh where has the time gone?

I have no clue.

In 10 days my Tween will officially be a Teen.

It feels like it was just yesterday that she was 4. (that’s how old she was when we came into each others lives.)

What a strange  concept.

I will be the parent of a Teenager.

Teenagerhood is a terrifying prospect. She is insanely excited about it.. but it opens doors to some heavy and scary stuff (At least from our perspective.) That big stuff looms in the distance like that big black monolith thing from 2001: A Space Odessy.

Drugs. Alcohol. Boys. Sex.Teenage Pregnancy. STD’s. Gangs. Violence. Guns.

Sheesh. That’s probably just the tip of the iceberg.  Don’t get me wrong, I know there are lots of good things that teenagerhood brings… All I can do is hope we are teaching her to make good decisions, to be honest and to not get herself into any of the bad stuff.

I guess it’s just such a terror-inducing birthday(for me), since it is a completely different world than when I turned 13.  I wonder if my parents worried about all of those things 24 years ago?  I doubt they had to worry about kids bringing guns to school and shooting up the place.

What I remember about being 13/in 7th grade?

Getting a maybelline eyeshadow quad for my birthday. I remember having A LOT of fun: Having sleepovers with my BFF, making crank calls, eating pizza, going to the mall, liking boys, making a leaf collection for science class, and being picked on by my own personal “Mean Girls” (Okay, that was not so much fun. 7th grade was one of the worst years ever for me. But that’s probably a whole other post.)

And in today’s world, its hard to let her do any of that.

Her BFF has been to our house once. Yes,  once. (And that was after asking about 4 times. She finally convinced her mom it would be okay.) And a sleepover? I somehow doubt that would happen anytime soon.  She’s had sleepover sbefore… with my niece, and with a couple of friends we were close with when we lived in Las Vegas. But since we’ve been here, we don’t really know anyone well enough to even try to hold such an event.

I REALLY REALLY REALLY hope that her friends moms will let them come to her birthday festivities.  She is inviting up to 5 friends to come over and eat pizza, watch movies, play Wii, and hang out (and eat surprise Glee inspired cupcakes).

So, I get to spend the next 10 days cleaning the house, and getting ready for the arrival of teenagerhood, and the (family) party that will commemorate this momentous day.

Well… I should probably go make some dinner.  Hubby is heading out again tomorrow.  (That is depending on the gigantic storm taking over half of the country. )  Home cooking is always appreciated before he goes. And I need to make some Superbowl cookies to take with him…. I’m torn between sending him Packer cookies.. or to mess with him and send Steeler ones. muah haha!

Happy February!

Minions and Schmucks and Noodles! Oh My!

I think we had a pretty okay weekend.

Saturday was fairly uneventful. I slept in until about 1. Which is highly unusual luckily K watched KT so I could sleep. I had another bad night trying to sleep and I had a headache and just couldn’t stay awake. KT woke me up about 10 or so wanting  juice and “Mama ‘m soaking wet! It’s on my legs and feet!” Ugh. So I made a juice run to the kitchen, changed the soggy mess, put on Nick Jr and that’s all I remember until hubby called and woke me up.  After that I found some motivation and actually emptied a few boxes in the garage.

I had been planning on taking the kids to the drive in on Friday night. But I somehow managed to lose the $40 that was going to fund the excursion. Biggest.bonehead.ever. I know it was in my pocket when we were at orientation at school and then it was gone. I probably had my phone (or keys) in that pocket and it fell out when I took the phone out. UGH. Sadly it’s not the first time this has happened. Last time it was $12.  So I felt stupid,  was mad at myself, and was feeling really sad that P couldn’t come home this weekend. I decided that we should just stay home.  So after getting over the sting of losing the money, I decided to go  anyway. We all needed to get out of the house.

After removing the stroller and various randomness from the back of the truck, we filled it with pillows and blankets and such. I ordered a pizza to pick up – can’t beat the Domino’s large one topping with extra cheese for $6.99 carry out special!  (If i had that same pizza delivered it would have cost almost $20.) We got in the truck and away we went! We ran into Fresh & Easy  and got some drinks, popcorn and candy.  Went to the ATM, and then picked up the pizza. Katie saying “I want go to movie theatre!” the whole way!

I had decided that we were going to go see “Despicable Me.” The other option was the Dogs & Cats  movie and I am seriously not sitting through that. Yuck-O.  It was a cute movie, as far a kids movies go. I’ve seen better – I’ve seen worse. The best part was when the minions said “Oh poop.”  KT was really fidgety most of the time and ate a boat load of “Pock-corn” and she couldn’t get enough “Noodles” which in her world are Skittles. I’m not sure why she calls them that, but she does.  I really wanted to stay for the 2nd movie with was “Dinner for Schmucks.” I don’t ever get to go to the movies without the children so I wanted to see it for me. It’s not something I normally would have let K see….We’re usually pretty strict about what we let her watch. But she’s growing up, and she’s really seen a lot more PG-13 movies lately than ever before.

I usually go to kids-in-mind.com to get an idea of what a movie really has in it. They rate the movies from 0-10 on the Sex & nudity, Violence/Gore and Profanity. So all the movies have a rating like 6.5.2. Then they describe all of the incidents in each category. It’s very specific.  They also list discussion topics and the moral of the story.  I think it’s a fantastic site! they also have an iPhone app now!

So Dinner for Schmucks was 6.5.5. (Despicable Me was 2.3.2 in case you were wondering.) It had a little more sexual content than I normally let her see… but it wasn’t really overt, and I’m pretty sure most of it went over her head. At least I hope it did. (fingers crossed!) And she was half asleep through some of it. I liked it. It wasn’t as hilarious as I wanted it to be…. but I don’t think anything will ever be as funny as the Hangover was!

So we got back late, I hoped I could sleep… but that didn’t happen until about 3 or so… read last nights sleepless post here. I think I decided that the noise I heard also could have been a shovel being knocked over… I noticed it was on the ground today and then I knocked it over too.  Who knows.  Lets hope sleep wins one of these nights.

Despite being up until 3, I managed to get up at 9 this morning. Not out of my own free will mind you.. a certain small person was beckoning for me.  I do give myself kudos for staying awake after that!  Yay me! We cleaned up the house a little bit, I took a shower, went to the store for juice and milk. And then we headed to meet my sister at IKEA in Costa Mesa. I have never been to IKEA before.  We had one back in PA, but never actually went. And for some strange reason that no one can figure out: there  isn’t one in Las Vegas.  (Vegas also doesn’t have a Chick-fil-a) So this was my first adventure/experience at IKEA.

Traffic was bad, I got lost, and my sister sat there for 45 minutes waiting for us.  We did finally make it! It was insane! I don’t think I’ve ever been to a store where there were just hoards of people walking in, walking out… just everywhere!  I don’t think I’ve ever been in an elevator that will hold 2 strollers and e shopping carts! It was seriously the craziest place I think I’ve ever been.

*If you didn’t catch this on today’s Freshly pressed, here is a very entertaining blog about a trip to IKEA.

KT was making our “shopping list” or scribbling on an order form to stay occupied. But that meant that she dropped the pencil and the catalog she was holding about 150 times. She was pretty good overall. After finding my sister’s “Billy” bookshelf and lots of goodies I wasn’t intending on buying.. (although I did get some cute and inexpensive flower pots for my Hibiscus I bought a few weeks ago.) we headed to the checkout! $27 later we were ready to get some frozen yogurt!

KT +frozen yogurt was definitely interesting. She loves ice cream, but I usually just give her a little bit at a time on a spoon, she’s never really had a cone before. She liked it a bit and then started trying to eat the cone! It turned into quite a drippy mess… then she dropped it in the cup holder in her stroller. Yay. Oh, and she proceeded to finish what was left of my cone at that moment when I tried to clean it up! It was really less messy than I thought it would turn out to be.

After a lovely drive home, with very little traffic. we stopped to wash the truck that was so dirty it was brown and not blue anymore.  I cleaned up a little more, KT got sand in her eye, smashed her finger between the couch and the wall, and we ate some left over pizza for dinner. Now if only I could get her to go to sleep. She is seriously wound up!

I guess I should have posted this last night… but I once I actually got the maniac to go to sleep. I got sidetracked watching the new episode of True Blood and then I had a pounding headache and I actually went to sleep BEFORE 3 Am!  WOOOO HOOOOOO!   if you are keeping track, that is Sleep 1 Bumps in the night 2!

And more interestingly I got up at 9, and was moderately productive! I cleaned my bathroom, tidied up the bedroom, swept & mopped the linoleum in the kitchen/dining area/entry way, and vacuumed the living room. I know its pretty amazing… I think I may be really getting back into the swing of things. Which is just in time since SCHOOL STARTS ON WEDNESDAY! Not that I am excited or anything…  K sure isn’t.

Oh well.. i must go find some lunch to feed a small maniac who is throwing dirty socks at me.  Until next time!

A Wonderfully Wacky Wednesday

Hello Blog day 2. Wow, that is corny.. cheesy… lame-o… I promise to never do that again! 🙂

I don’t think I mentioned this, but K is at camp this week, so it’s just me and the KT until next Tuesday.  That fact definitely makes life interesting and quite challenging to say the least.

I tried really hard to go to sleep Tuesday night at a decent time. Decent= any time before 2 am. And as in most every night I failed miserably. At 6:45 the garbage truck making a giant ruckus scared the crap out of me.  I tried to go back to sleep, but alas the weather report and the beginning of the Today show sucked me in.  Just as I was dozing off again around 7:30 Miss KT came in and made sure I definitely wasn’t getting to go back to sleep. Oh well, I was planning on getting up at 8 anyway.

I had decided to lose my mind and try to take KT to the movies for the first time.  She’s been to the drive in with us a few times, but there she can be the maniac that she is without irritating everyone else..  so the movie theater was going to be an interesting experience.

Regal Theaters have their Free Family Film Festival running all summer. Tuesday and Wednesday mornings at 10am they show (sort of old) family movies for FREE! Can’t beat that! Especially with a toddler! And the closest theater is  about 100 feet (okay maybe a little farther) from our house. We could totally walk there.  Check it out! http://www.regmovies.com/nowshowing/familyfilmfestivalschedule.aspx?state=CA

I talked to KT about going to the movie theater and she was very excited! Especially when I mentioned popcorn.  She LOOOOVES “Pock-corn”!  We headed over. Our choices were “Ice Age” or “Stuart Little”. I opted for “Stuart Little” thinking that the talking mice and cats would entertain her.  Now, I realize Ice Age was probably  the better way to go.

I decided to get a small “pock-corn” and a diet coke…. which was $12.75!! The small popcorn was seriously $6.00. Highway robbery. But at least I didn’t have to pay to get in. She did pretty good.  She loved the popcorn, and even though the seat kept trying to swallow her, she watched the movie for an entire hour.  After that she started getting really antsy and when she whacked the lady in front of us in the head, I knew it was time to go.

After that we had some lunch, I actually unpacked some boxes (We moved about a month ago, which is a whole ordeal unto itself).  We spent a little time outside playing in the sand,  it was pretty hot so I didn’t want to be out there long.  There was play dough playing, blocks, coloring… and the list goes on and on… she’s a busy busy kid.

Overall it was a god day… We had a nice dinner of Orange Chicken from trader Joe’s (which is REALLY good for frozen!), we had a Skype call with Grandma… and after we got off the call, I realized that I was FREEZING!  The A/C was on, so I didn’t think much of it, until I noticed that it was more than a chill…. I had a fever! So randomly weird!

Its gone now, and I pretty much feel okay now. I could take a nap though…. but only if my little busy-body takes one first!
