Saturday Afternoon at LACMA

On Saturday, I surprised the Teen by taking her to LACMA (Los Angeles County Museum of Art; and it’s pronounced “lack-ma”) to see the Tim Burton Exhibit. My sister met us there too!

She was really excited! She likes Tim Burton a lot, and was “dying” to go. (Espeically once she saw the episode of Cupcake Wars where they made thier display for the opening of the exhibit.)

You can read a little about the exhibit HERE.

Cameras and cell phones were forbidden in the exhibit, so I didn’t get to take any pictures of anything. I would have snuck a few but there were soooo many people and many cranky security guards.  It was very interesting to see his sketches and other art work. I didn’t get to see a lot of it, since I was trying to keep the Maniac entertained and remotely quiet. I must say that was quite a challenge.

After the Tim Burton portion of our day, we wandered over to the La Brea Tar Pits. The first time my sister took the Teen there a few years ago, she didn’t realize that they were real. I had never been there before. We didn’t go to the museum or anything… I don’t think a certain someone would have been up for that.  It was kind of cool to see though.

Then we had some lunch at Baja Fresh and we went back to the museum to look at some more art. I don’t think I’ve ever seen a real Picasso before. It was pretty cool.

I also thought the new Monet/Lichtenstein: Rouen Cathedrals exhibit was interesting.  You can read about that HERE.  I would have to say that Monet is my favorite artist. (Do you say artist? Painter? Impressionist?) I have a few prints of his work hanging up. Waterlilies is my favorite… I know there are a bunch of them.. my very favorite is the one that (when I saw it and it could still be there) was at The Carnegie is Pittsburgh.

Anyway- Here are a few shots of some art that you were allowed to photograph:

My apologies to the artists, since I did not take note of who these works were by.

Here’s some art we got into literally:

And finally… we learned a little about the Chinese Zodiac.

I am an Ox, The Teen is a Tiger, The Maniac is a Rat and my Sister is a Horse.

This one's for you Chickmommy!

We had a pretty good day.

We only got yelled at by security 4 times… no one fell in the fountain or broke any priceless works of art.  I call that successful.

Next time we go, I’m not taking the 3-year-old. 😉
And on our way home, we got to swing by the airport and pick up my hubby! Definitely the best part of the day.

Did she just call my 3-year-old a bully?

As most of you know, if you read this ramblings from my brain on any sort of regular basis, my dear Maniac is three and a half.

She’s bigger than all the other three-year-olds in our play group  in the world! She is off the charts for her age. And people tend to forget that despite the fact that she is the size of the average 5-year-old, she’s only three.

She can get a little aggressive when she’s playing with other kids, she has pushed and hit, taken toys away, and one time she even bit one of her little friends.

She doesn’t mean any harm. She’s not doing it to be mean or just to pick on the littler kids. She’s just three. She doesn’t have other kids to play with during the day.. she just has me. She’s still learning the ropes of playing and interacting with her peers.

That being said… the person who I thought was my closest friend here, had been acting really strange for the last month or so- basically just not talking to me unless she had to.  I finally had the opportunity to confront her about it on Tuesday. Her reasoning for just not talking to me:

“The Maniac is a bully, and you don’t do enough to stop her.”

Wow.  Ouch.

My first reaction was that I know she can be rough.. but I’m working on it.

After thinking about it for a few days, I’ve come to the realization that it’s not fair to brand her a “”BULLY”. That’s a really strong word.  That makes you think of intimidation and malicious intent, preying on the weak.

She’s just a little girl who is trying to figure stuff out.  Like I said, she doesn’t have other kids to play and fight with all day.. she just has me and (when she’s not in school) the Teen.  She has to learn somehow. So she gets mad and hits someone. or bites them (which I’m pretty sure is where this whole thing started.) or takes a toy away… whatever…  It could happen to any kid by any kid. That doesn’t make her “the Bully.”

As for the “You don’t do enough to stop it” I’ve been thinking a lot about that too.  I definitely feel like she is attacking my parenting. Theres a really fine line between being helpful and being a judgmental jerk. I would never judge her parenting decisions. You have to do what you have to do.  And truth be told, I have witnessed  a couple of things that I would never do, but I would never call her out on… unless of course the kids were truly in danger.

Yes, my husband kindly pointed out a week or two ago that maybe I give the Maniac too many chances to get her to stop doing stuff. I’ve been working on that. And I have instituted an absolute no hitting policy. You hit/bite = time out. No exceptions.  We’ve also been talking about what it means to do nice things and mean things, as well as what to do when you feel angry that doesn’t involve touching other people.  It’s going to take some time… but I know she’ll  get it.

She has actually been quite good on the last two playdates we were on. So there 😛 .

Maybe I didn’t reprimand her to her liking because I was with a bunch of women that I don’t know very well. Come on, you know as well I as do that you don’t yell at the kids like you normally would in front of strangers or people you aren’t 100% comfortable with… mostly because you don’t want them judging you, or thinking you are a horrible parent.

Be realistic- if you have ever been to a playgroup… all the:

“Come on honey, we don’t _____________” in the sweetest tone ever…

You know they most likely don’t talk to the kids at home. You know there’s some yelling going on there… maybe I’m wrong… but in my experience… when there are kids they eventually make you yell no matter how hard you try not to.

Anyway- that’s what I’ve been dealing with this week. Now I have to decide whether I need to just let it go, or say something to her about the unfairness of labeling her a Bully.  I will probably just let it go… it’s not worth the energy to worry about it… she’s going to think what she wants anyway no matter what I say.

I just have to show her that she’s anything but a bully.

What a Wednesday.

So here are the highlights of my Wednesday:

-I actually managed to get up and go to the gym. My trainer made me do far more lunges than I’d care to- which would naturally be 0 and she made me do like 1,000,000. Okay, maybe not.. but it was still a lot.

-By 10:30am, the Maniac was on her 3rd pair of underwear. Pair #1 was soiled with some #2 and pair #2 was drenched in #1 right in front of the toilet. Awesomely frustrating.

-While picking her up to put her in time-out for throwing something at me, the Maniac bit me really hard in the shoulder. There’s still a mark.

-While in the kitchen getting her something to eat, she got a fork out of the drawer and proceeded to stab me in the butt with it.

-Around 1:30 I couldn’t keep my eyes open. I tried to convince her to take a nap, but of course she was far too busy to sleep. I dozed off a couple of times and was rudely awakened by being poked in the eye, and then jumped on.

-She finally decided that she did want to sleep at  6:30pm. I only let her sleep until about 7:15 since I wanted to sleep before midnight. (Not that I actually ot to sleep before midnight… but it wasnt because of her.)

-I had what I think to be a pretty good talk with the Teen. Hopefully she actually heard what I had to say.

-I did get to watch America’s Next Top Model All Stars and CSI uninterrupted. Which was quite wonderful and refreshing.

And then I went to bed far too late and didn’t get up for this gym this morning.

Wishing you a Thursday that does not include a fork in the butt! hahaha! 😀

Not much new & exciting around here.

I really didn’t want to get dressed today. I’m not sure why  even bothered.

I’ve decided that on laundry day it should be mandatory to stay in your pj’s until the laundry is complete. Sometimes that takes a couple of days if I’m feeling particularly lazy. haha!

Not much is really new and exciting around here.

We’ve been dealing with some uber-procrastination from the Teen…which I am going to let her learn about the hard way, even if it means her getting a terrible grade. I think that’s the only way that she’s going to get it.

The Maniac has been being an even bigger handful than normal. There’s been lots of screaming, tantrums and just big fun where she’s concerned.

I got to see my Vegas BFF on Sunday, which was much-needed and quite refreshing. My amazingly wonderful sister (who really is amazing and wonderful and I’m not just saying that because she reads this.) came over and watched the kids so we could spend some quality child-free time together. We had lunch and went and wandered around this crazy mall/shopping center thing.  It was a nice afternoon just window shopping and chatting and catching up. She’s been really busy between work and her new boyfriend that we havent talked as much as we should have!

The Steelers lost. No, they just didn’t lose.. it was a bloodbath. I really think it wasn’t them, and it was just 53 imposters in Steelers uniforms.. since they didn’t play “Steeler Football” at all.  There’s always next week. And at least we didn’t get creamed by the Raiders like my Brother-in-law’s beloved Broncos did! haha!

I’m ready to start working on the girls Halloween costumes. I have what I need to make them..I just need to make the time and find the inspiration. I usually have an October 1st deadline for the Teen’s costume decision, but I bumped it up this year, since last year her costume was a nightmare… this one should be easier… theoretically. I’ll tell you more about them later!

That’s all for now.. I just heard the washer stop, and the Maniac is wanting my attention and keeps sticking her head under my arm while I am trying to type.

Have a terrific Tuesday! 🙂

One Super Cranky Mama

Sometime around 6am I heard the magic words “I hava pee Mama!” There was peeing and then I went back to sleep. (I have still been having trouble falling asleep, it was about 1 by the time I dozed off.)

An hour later, I was very, very rudely awakened  by a certain three-year-old whacking me in the face with a stuffed animal. The culprit was either an orange kitty named Marmalade from Build-a-bear or a very hungry caterpillar.

Either way it definitely did not make we up on the right side of the bed.

I can just feel the crankiness coursing through my veins. I would very much love to hide under the covers with a gallon of coffee, a giant candy bar and maybe a couple pints of Ben & Jerry’s.

Maybe then I’d feel better. Or worse. (I would probably feel pretty gross if I ate all that.) Anyway- Let’s just pretend Id feel happy and chipper and have a super outlook on my day!

It is so bad, I could feel myself looking for things to pick a fight with the Teen about before she left for school. Luckily, my brain was grumpy and caffeine deprived and I couldn’t remember all the things I thought of. Especially the fact that she left the frosting I made for the cookies that I’m taking to a meetup tonight out on the counter after she moved it to get something out of the fridge.

I think it’s funny that I forgot. Maybe it was just the part of my brain that knew it would be bad if I picked a fight. Whatever it was, it was probably for the best.

Now the trick is to keep the Maniac off of me until I can get in a better frame of mind. Ugh. It never fails that when I am in THE worst mood is when she wants to do nothing but hang on me and I just want to scream.

So far, so good. <<knock on wood>>

She’s currently sitting in the living room eating grapes and watching “Cats & Dogs: the Revenge of Kitty Galore” for the 50th time this week. I have had to threaten to turn it off several times to get her to leave me be.. but for right now she’s occupied.

We’ll see how long I can keep her that way. I have much to do today. Cookies to frost, dip to make.  (We’re going to a BBQ tonight!)

I think I need another cup of coffee… or 6.

Hope your weekend is off to a better start! 🙂

A very Trying Tuesday.

Well.. the weekend went by way too fast, and here it is Tuesday. and a trying Tuesday it has been.

I really wanted to get up and go to the gym, I didn’t hear any of my 3 alarms that I set to get up at 5.  I guess I needed to sleep.

I was rudely awakened by a Maniac pooptastrophy. UGH. I don’t know what she’s been eating… actually I think it’s probably the allergy medicine I’ve been giving her.. but the last couple days have been some of the foulest, nastiest smelling packages she has ever shared with me. Just what I wanted to deal with a 7am.  And it required a hose-down in the bath tub both times it happened this morning.  EWWWW. And you should consider yourself lucky i did not go into further detail of the situation.

In other excitement… the Teen decided to take Choir as her elective this year. I’m not really sure why exactly, being that she has never showed any interest in singing before and I’m not confident that she could carry a tune in a bucket. But whatever, that’s what she picked and she actually go it.  She has been in Choir for 5 minutes. Okay, today will be the 7th class she’s had. and they have a performance tonight at the “Back To school Night.” I am not sure how they could have even learned the words to a song in 7 hours.

I guess we shall see how that goes for her. I keep forgetting about back to school night. I would have been completely content not getting out of my PJ’s today. Then i realized at about 1pm that we have to go to it. I wouldnt mind so much if it wasnt for the incredibly crazy 3-year-old I have to drag along with me. I am not really a fan of taking her anywhere lately… this should be a super awesome good time. We have to follow the Teen’s schedule and go from class to class and listen to all of her teachers give a little talk about their classes this year.  last year it was not pretty. By the time we got to about 4th period, the Maniac was over it. I don’t think we even went to her last period class because of all the screaming. I may have to break out the big guns and let her play games on my phone or something if I have to.

And in even more exciting news… my wonderful Hubby will be home tomorrow afternoon for a few days. YAY! That is, Now that we got his flights fixed. The new girl who made his reservations didn’t know that he doesn’t fly into LAX…so she had him flying in there at 4:30 pm. Yea.. I’m not driving  the 1-1.5 hours it is with no traffic to LAX, let alone at rush hour. It would take me 2 hours to get there and 3 hours to get home. Especially when even with traffic, it takes about 20 minutes to get to his usual airport.  Luckily she was able to change it.

At least he will be home for a little while. Then he goes back to North Carolina for a week and hopefully will be back for a few days before they ship him off somewhere else. woo. yea, i can’t think about that yet. I’m just going to be thankful that I get to see him tomorrow!

Well.. that’s all the excitement for now. I need to go gather my Maniac entertainment supplies and figure out what to feed them for dinner!

Have you missed me?

I’ve kind of been MIA for a while.

I just had to go look when the last time I posted was, since I had no idea. Apparently it was the 15th of July, after our Harry Potter fun.

I’ve had a busy couple of weeks. I have tried to post a couple of times.. but somehow I never got anything finished.

What’s been going on? Here’s some high lights!

1. Hubby is 2 weeks into another month sweating his butt off in the south. I miss him terribly.  We did have a really great time when he was home.

2.  I spent a week alone with the Maniac while the Teen was visiting my parents. It was good for her. And quite a challenge for me to keep my sanity while keeping the Maniac entertained solo. Especially the handful she is at the moment. I was sooo happy when the Teen came home!

3.  My ever-proving-their-stupidity Health Insurance company (remember the one who sent me the $0.27 check?) decided to not process my payment correctly and sent me a refund check for the dental portion of my payment and proceeded to cancel the policy. Awesome.  I knew there was no way I could have over paid THAT much, especially since I just paid the amount the website said was due! Idiots.

4. I got a good laugh when the Teen refered to her maternal grandmother as”Crazy” like that was her name. “Crazy keeps sending me texts.” That was awesome. At least she’s seeing the light.

5. I have been watching “Charmed” from the beginning. Somehow I never got into that show when it was on.. but now I have 173 episodes to keep me entertained for a while.

6. School starts one week from today! Yikes!

7. I’ve been working very hard to deep clean the house this week. I scheduled a Meet Up here on Friday (What was I thinking!?!?!) and the Management coming to do their yearly inspection on Monday. I guess I’m killing two birds with one stone. Woo.

8. We had an unexpected trip to Urgent Care on Sunday. The Teen had this weird (and scary) light-headed hyperventilation episode.  The 500-year-old doctor kept saying it was probably stress.. but she doesn’t seem to be stressed out at the moment (but then again, she hasn’t heard from her mother in a year, and school starts in a week). They did find out that she has a “pretty nasty” kidney infection.  I am glad I followed my gut and took her in.

9. I took the Teen school shopping at the thrift store and spent $31 on 6 pairs of jeans. Yes I said 6! And every pair of jeans I bought would have been FAR more than $31 each.  One was from old navy, two from Express, one from Hollister, and probably my biggest score ever… a pair from 7 for all mankind. If you don’t know of  7 for all mankind. I think they are probably the most expensive jeans ever. No joke.. they run about $175 a pair or more.  For jeans. Its crazy.  I paid $5 for them. Go me.

10. Oh, get this one… Do you remember “The New Girl”? My Brother In Law’s old girlfriend who I have sort of kept in touch with. By sort of I mean- I am friends with her on Facebook, I havent actually talked to/texted her in a couple of months, have seen her one time since she moved back to Las Vegas in January.  She texted me out of the blue the other day asking if she, her new boyfriend and their kids (they each have 1) could stay with us when they come out to go to Disneyland. Kinda random, kinda rude.   The best part was that I saw her post something on FB about wanting a Disneyland weekend and told the boyfriend that she had a place for them to stay. Little did I realize that it was my house, she has another friend that lives in the area and she usually stays with her when she comes out.  She just posted on my FB (moments ago) that it’s tentatively in 2 weeks.. which is hopefully the weekend that Hubby should be back. Yea.. he’s not going to be down with that at all. Sorry about her luck. 😉

Well.. That’s about it. I must get back to my cleaning. Today’s agenda is getting the laundry put away and starting on the dining room. I’m sooo looking forward to the floor scrubbing part of this deep cleaning project. awesome.

I hope everyone is well!  🙂
