Getting back to “Normal”

It’s official.

The Teen is finally back to school today so the holiday season is finally over for us! Woo hoo! While it’s been nice having her around for three weeks, it’s good for her to get back to school! I think she missed it.

What I may not have mentioned is that my dear hubby has been home and not working pretty much as long as the Teen has been on break.  It’s wonderful that he’s been home that long.. way not great that he hasn’t been working.  And of course it seems that he filled something out wrong on an unemployment form, so that’s been held up.. (But I just talked to him, and they have supposedly straightened it out.)…so these last few weeks have not been easy for us.

But we are getting back to normal.

He started back to work last Thursday.

Wait- are you ready for this..?

He’s going to be working here for a whole, entire month! I don’t know the last time that happened! He can go to sleep in our bed, wake up, go to work and come home and have dinner as a family …. like a normal person!

I kind of forgot what that felt like.

It was seriously weird those first two days.  It was like the good ol’ days when he had a “normal” job, and we were a “normal” family.

Yes, we have created a “new normal” with his being gone all the time… and we’ve managed pretty okay over these last couple years.

But going back to the old way, is kind of refreshing. I think everyone needed this. Which also means it’s probably going to suck that much more the next time he goes out-of-town.

Oh, and the icing on our “normal” cake- my brother-in-law is working with him on  this job, and is going to be staying with us for a month! So it’s really a flash back!  The kids really miss him a lot. (Shhh.. don’t tell him, but I miss him too.)When I told the Maniac that he was coming, for three days  every time someone whet near the door she said “Is uncle here!?!?!”

He just got here yesterday, and first thing out of her mouth this morning, was “Is uncle still here?” I had to reassure her that he was just working with daddy and they would be home later. “Okay Mama.. let’s go to the airport and get them!”  It’s probably not good that she thinks we have to get daddy at the airport every time he comes home from work.

Oh well… Reality beckons… I have a huge mountain of laundry waiting for me, and a to do list a mile and a half long.

It’s going to be a busy day!

2011 New Years Resolutions- the final results

Christmas went by in a flash.

Now its only a few days until 2012 is here.

Where did 2011 go?

Despite the ups and downs… I think it was a pretty good year.

I managed to keep a few of last years resolutions…

Here is the original list..

And an update.. and another..

When I last checked in 6 months ago, my score was

Resolutions 4.5 Me 5.5

New Years Resolution #1- Post more!

Revisited result: January= 14 posts, February =19 posts.

July update: March=12, April=10, May=14 & June=13

 Since then: July=6   August=13  September=10  October=4 November=5 December=6

126 posts this year!  I think that is definitely successful.

Resolutions 0  Me 1

New Years Resolution #2- We are going to find financial health this year.

This one is definitely #1 on my new list of resolutions.  Again, it’s still eluding us. We are going to make some changes to hopefully get us in a better place this year. I don’t think that we are worse off right now than we were at this time last year… we are pretty much the same. Which in either case is not good.

Resolutions 1 Me 1

New Years Resolution #3- Patience.

Eh. Still a work in progress.

Resolutions 2 Me 1

New Years Resolution #4- more Weight Loss.

I’m going to still give myself the points for this one.. I’ve reached a plateau.. but I have a new gym buddy! So I’ve been going to the gym more again!

Resolutions 2 Me 2

New Years Resolution #5- POTTY TRAINING!

This is my biggest success of the year for sure! She still has some issues with the poop.. but she is a peeing superstar!

Resolutions 2 Me 3

As for 6-10…

#6 Read more.   I was doing pretty well. I made my summer reading list, which I actually crossed a few off the list. I need to get back to it though. But I made some progress so, 1 for me!

#7 house cleaner, purge the junk.  Still a work in progress. I am determined to not suffer from CHAOS (Can’t Have Any One Over Syndrome) any longer.

#8 Not be so lazy about cooking dinner every night.  I was doing way better… but then got lazy… I do cook every night when the hubby is home.  (We’ll score that one half for me.)

#9 Go to my 20th High School Reunion if there is one. then I changed it to.. Take a Trip Back to the Burgh by the end of the year.

Yea that didn’t happen.

#10 actually make time for myself.  I try. But am not always successful. (Half for me)

The final score: Resolutions:  5  Me: 5

At least I tied the resolutions and it wasnt a complete blow out!

I hope your year was a good one.

I’m sure you’re just dying to hear about this years resolutions! 🙂

Happy New Year!

Happy the-day-after Thanksgiving!

It was a busy, but very nice day for us! My parents and sister were here. My hubby is home for a whole week!

I spent a lot of time yesterday thinking about all that I am thankful for:

-my wonderful husband
-my crazy wonderful kids
– my amazing parents
-my sister
-my brother
-my brother-in-law
-my nieces and nephews
-my 2 bff’s
-all of my friends new and old and on FB 🙂
– that my husband has a job, even though it takes him away from us quite often
– that my husband has a job that allows me to stay at home with the kids
– the roof over our heads and the food on the table
– our dog
– health

Those are the important ones anyway.

I hope everyone had as wonderful a day as we did.

Happy Thanksgiving!

Forgive & Forget? Not so easy.

I’m having a hard time letting go of some anger.

It’s kind of stupid I guess, but my feelings were very hurt.

As you know, my birthday was a couple of weeks ago.

Two things happened that really upset me, and I can’t quite let it go.

It probably makes me seem selfish, but at the same time it was two very important people in my life that I expected more out of… which I guess is my fault for having expectations… which is why it makes it seem selfish & probably stupid. But my feelings were hurt, so it’s not that stupid. Does that even make any sense?

1. My brother didn’t call/text/Facebook/email or anything on my birthday. And it’s not like it’s some random month of the year where he might forget…. my birthday is 5 days before his.  Just a text would have been nice. Seriously. Even when we don’t take very often it’s the one week out of the year that we always talk to each other twice. And I got big, fat, nothing.  I don’t know what’s going on in his world. I called him on his birthday (much to my chagrin) , left a message and of course he didn’t call back.

2. I havent talked to my Las Vegas BFF in quite a while. She’s always really busy with work, and now the new boyfriend. I guess I expected more out of her, being my BFF and all… She left for a 3 week trip abroad a day or 2 before my birthday. It seems that all I rated was a text message from the plane when she had already flown to NYC.  That really hurt my feelings too.  And now she’s back and is supposed to call me tonight and I just can’t stop being mad.

I know if I voice either of these things to the people involved, I’m going to sound like a complete idiot. I know I need to let it go. But at the same time, I sort of feel like they should know I was hurt by their actions.

I just don’t know what to do. Sigh.

Saturday Night!

It’s Saturday night. It’s getting pretty crazy up in here. Okay, not at all.

I am sitting on the couch catching up on some DVR stuff. Hubby is snoozing on the recliner, and the girls are watching TV in the other room.

We are celebrating my birthday this weekend. it’s actually next weekend, but sadly my hubby will be away working. 😦 I’m sad… but at least we can have some birthday fun this weekend.

We took the kids to the pumpkin patch today! It was fun.. far more expensive than you would think, picking three pumpkins would be, but its all about the experience, right?

We took the wagon ride around the farm, went to the petting zoo & fed the goats, managed to not get lost in the corn maze, and picked our pumpkins. It was fun. The maniac had a great time, and managed to carry her pumpkin most of the way to pay for it.

Tonight, we are going to go have a birthday dinner. I got a free dinner for my birthday from Black Angus Steakhouse for joining their e-club, so we are going to use that coupon! I’ve also gotten birthday emails from Chili’s (Free dessert), Lonestar (Free appetizer) and Sephora (A free philosophy body wash.)

Woo hoo for my birthday!

I’m not sure what we are going to do tomorrow… but it will be something birthday-rific!! 🙂

Well, I’m going to go take a shower and get pretty for dinner.

Hope everyone is having a great weekend! 🙂

Saturday Afternoon at LACMA

On Saturday, I surprised the Teen by taking her to LACMA (Los Angeles County Museum of Art; and it’s pronounced “lack-ma”) to see the Tim Burton Exhibit. My sister met us there too!

She was really excited! She likes Tim Burton a lot, and was “dying” to go. (Espeically once she saw the episode of Cupcake Wars where they made thier display for the opening of the exhibit.)

You can read a little about the exhibit HERE.

Cameras and cell phones were forbidden in the exhibit, so I didn’t get to take any pictures of anything. I would have snuck a few but there were soooo many people and many cranky security guards.  It was very interesting to see his sketches and other art work. I didn’t get to see a lot of it, since I was trying to keep the Maniac entertained and remotely quiet. I must say that was quite a challenge.

After the Tim Burton portion of our day, we wandered over to the La Brea Tar Pits. The first time my sister took the Teen there a few years ago, she didn’t realize that they were real. I had never been there before. We didn’t go to the museum or anything… I don’t think a certain someone would have been up for that.  It was kind of cool to see though.

Then we had some lunch at Baja Fresh and we went back to the museum to look at some more art. I don’t think I’ve ever seen a real Picasso before. It was pretty cool.

I also thought the new Monet/Lichtenstein: Rouen Cathedrals exhibit was interesting.  You can read about that HERE.  I would have to say that Monet is my favorite artist. (Do you say artist? Painter? Impressionist?) I have a few prints of his work hanging up. Waterlilies is my favorite… I know there are a bunch of them.. my very favorite is the one that (when I saw it and it could still be there) was at The Carnegie is Pittsburgh.

Anyway- Here are a few shots of some art that you were allowed to photograph:

My apologies to the artists, since I did not take note of who these works were by.

Here’s some art we got into literally:

And finally… we learned a little about the Chinese Zodiac.

I am an Ox, The Teen is a Tiger, The Maniac is a Rat and my Sister is a Horse.

This one's for you Chickmommy!

We had a pretty good day.

We only got yelled at by security 4 times… no one fell in the fountain or broke any priceless works of art.  I call that successful.

Next time we go, I’m not taking the 3-year-old. 😉
And on our way home, we got to swing by the airport and pick up my hubby! Definitely the best part of the day.

The Book Report… another adventure in procras-teen-ation

Oh the Book Report.

Thankfully it is done, and probably turned in by now.

In my quest for her to learn about procrastination “the hard way,” I swore to myself that I wasn’t going to bring it up or say a word about it until the Teen did. She has known about this assignment since the first week of school… in fact, she has the list of dates when all of the book reports are due until the end of the year. (I think there are 6 in total.)

On Monday she said something about it, which was my queue to start asking questions.  Even with all of the talk about waiting until the last-minute to do things last week with the science fair proposal, I never crossed her mind to do anything with the book report.

“We are going to start them in class tomorrow.”

START THEM??!?!?!?!

They are due on Friday!!Are you serious? Now the teacher is encouraging the procrastination.  So.unbelivably.frustrating. Despite the apparent “starting” of the reports in school the next day, I made her work on that night.

It’s a good thing I did.

Guess who wasn’t in class Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursday to “start” them?

Her teacher.

Who thanked me for making her start the assignment on Monday?

The Teen.

Fancy that.

She had about 8 options she could pick from for the assignment. She chose to write an alternate ending to the book she read.  Which was “Ninth Grade Slays” by Heather Brewer. It’s some teenage vampire series that her BFF loves, so she started reading them. She’s into vampires right now.. she just finished reading the Twilight Saga.

I guess what she wrote was good. It made sense for what it was.. not having read the book.  She worked until after 10 last night to finish.  I guess it could have been worse…

I hope she gets the lesson I’ve been trying to teach her. Even if she just picks one day a week and works on it an hour or so… it’s going to be better than something she just scrawled something down on the paper at the last-minute. As much time as she spent rewriting her draft and editing it, I think that is totally the case.

She was trying to convince me that she can “write a good paper in two days.”  Which kind of showed me that she really thinks that this procrastination stuff is okay. I don’t think she’s a seasoned enough writer to pull off “good.” I think she could probably write an okay paper in two days.

I’m really curious to see what she gets on this paper.

I’m sure it won’t be an A.

Why won’t be an A you ask?

For starters- she didn’t put the title of the book or the author on it. If she read the assignment- it specifically said it would be lowered one letter grade if it was missing the title and author.  How do you write a BOOK report and NOT put the title or author on it? At one point, I made her find the paper to see if there was any specific format she had to use… and I caught that stipulation.

She apparently missed it. I asked her 4 times if there was anything else she needed to put on it.  Maybe it was wrong of me to not say anything… Maybe she’ll read the assignment next time.  I’m also not sure the format to use dialogue.  The way she typed it looked really strange to me. But, she swore that’s how her teacher said to do it.

Oh well…we shall see what happens.  I’m sure it will be a week or two before she gets it back. I’ll keep you posted.
