Weekly Photo Challenge: Up

I know, it’s been a while.

I know, Its been a while. Last week I spent with my Toddler who wasnt feeling 100%, but was on some medicine that made her crazy. That’s an interesting combination.  I spent a couple of days being lazy on the couch, pretending that I wasnt sick. (I just felt kind of crappy. Scratchy throat, stuffy nose. I believe that if you admit you are sick it will take over, but if you push through it without ever accepting it will go away.)  I actually read 2 whole books! I know, that is miraculous! It only took me until April to accomplish/start New Years Resolution #6.

I’ve also jumped back on the wagon for New Years resolution #4- lose more weight. Miraculously, I have managed to lose the couple of pounds that I gained back after I fell off the wagon around the holidays. I have a little over 30 pounds to go to hit my goal.  If I lose 2 pounds a week, I should hit that right about mid-July… which is right before my 20 year High school reunion! I just found out about it this week, although there is some Facebook drama about the location. Hopefully it will go off without a hitch and all the complainers will just suck it up and let it be. But that’s a story for another day.

So, I REALLY REALLY want to go to the reunion. The problem is that it is in Pittsburgh, PA. Which is going to cost about $1200 or more for my husband and I to go.  Which means that we need to save every single penny we can between now and then. I figure I wont seriously start looking for tickets until June. I havent been back there in almost 10 years, so I’m really excited to go. Hopefully the universe will agree and help me make it work.

Hmmm… what else..?

Hubby and I actually got to go on a date over the weekend. That was really nice . My brother-in-law watched the girls. Well, I use the word “watched” rather loosely. He dozed off on the couch while the Teen kept an eye on the Toddler. I guess he was there just in case. LOL Its all good, they had fun.  If you remember, my BIL lives across the street from the beach. He’s also a couple blocks from the main street where all the shops, restaurants and bars are. We walked up there, and found a place to have dinner.  We had some good food and good conversation. Then we went over to the candy store. 🙂 It’s a cute store with lots of super fun stuff, they always have Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory playing on a tv in the back.  We bought a few goodies and headed to the beach. It was supposed to be a moonlit walk, but it was really cloudy. We walked and sat and talked some more.. watched the waves roll in.  We totally needed that.

He actually was home for 3 whole nights this weekend. Pretty amazing. It was really nice. I am really lucky that he has been coming home every weekend instead of being gone for weeks on end.

I guess that’s it for now. I should try to get some sleep. The Toddler and I have a playdate @ the park in the morning. I found a Meetup.com group that started close by and we are hoping to go make some new friends! YAY for new friends! I could really use to make some friends. But that too is a whole other post on its own.

Good night! 🙂

Yes, I survived the beach

I have seriously sat down and tried to write about our beach adventure at least 3 different times now. It all keeps turning into this hugely detailed really long ramble about our weekend.  I don’t think anyone really wants to know THAT much about the weekend. 🙂

We all ended up having a good time.

Screaming toddler and all. 🙂

We spent a while in traffic getting there, and getting the key to my Brother-in-law’s apartment was an adventure unto itself… but we at least had somewhere to pee and bathe.

an interesting commentary on my Brother-in-law

Oh, and when i say apartment, I really mean glorified closet. Its teeny tiny. It has a tiny sink, a tiny shower and a tiny stove. The funniest part is my Brother in law is far from a tiny guy! But it’s across the street from the beach, and he loves it.

the tiny sink

It turned out the be a beautiful day. It was only probably at most 75, cooler with the wind. There weren’t a ton of people there, which made it so much better. If the heatwave wasn’t over, it would have been a whole other story.

headed to the beach from my brother in law's apartment, the beach is on the other side of that wall across the street

my handy pink tent/sunshade

I picked up this sunshade on clearance at Target probably 6 years ago. Its small, but it a great place to hide from the sun, to read or for toddlers to nap.

Some gulls before KT chased them away

We also saw a bunch of Brown Pelicans diving into the water to catch their food. It was pretty incredible! I could have sat and watched them all day. It was hard to get a picture of it, they are fast! And we also saw some random wild parrots.

I have no idea what this is... but its a neat pic

this was supposed to be a picture of a dead stingray, but i seem to have had my finger over the lens

We think hubby got stung by a sting ray while he was in the ocean with K. He thought it was a jellyfish at first, but I don’t think jellyfish can make you bleed like he did.

sea weed!

In the picture below, there are two heads bobbing in the water, that would be hubby and K. I didn’t get in. I am not a fan of not knowing what is underneath me. It freaks me out. KT played in the waves for a while and had a blast. That water was COLD!

This is my fave pic of the day.

These are the kites from all the crazy kite boarders. I didn’t realize that it was really a thing, or that popular. There were a bunch of them, and those kites are HUGE! It was interesting to watch.

the remains of the sand castle after it was stomped on by a toddler

We made a nice little castle. Then it was destroyed by a mighty dragon… also known as the crazy toddler. She had just as much fun destroying it as building it.

another accidental pic that looks kind of neat. This was while we were walking to have dinner

We walked to 2nd street, which is where all the food, shopping and nightlife is. We ended up just going to Subway, since BIL told us to go the wrong way to go to some other restaurant. It was good though. i was starving and it totally hit the spot. On the way back from eating, we also stopped at an old-fashioned candy store. K was in heaven… she got Dr. Pepper flavored jelly bellies. We got K some jelly beans too. They were super pricey but they loved it. And there’s nothing that will shut a toddler up or make her scream like candy!

while we were sitting outside Subway eating dinner, a guy asked us to watch his dog while he went inside to get food

That was our day. There was traffic on the way home, and then we stayed up way too late watching weird shows on National Geographic channel.. like “Swamp People” about people who hunt alligators.  It was weird, but interesting.

And needless to say- we ALL slept in on Sunday!

And Sunday was full of laundry and togetherness.

to the beach!

My hubby decided we need to go to the beach today..

Can you tell how excited I am?

I’m not.

The beach would be a fine place to go except for 2 things, wait make that 3-

1. all the sand- it just gets everywhere.

2. taking the children

3. other people – can be rude or just get in your way

The kids have a great time at the beach. I do not.

My husband has a great time at the beach. I do not.

Chasing a toddler around in the sand is not my idea of a super fantastically fun afternoon. But she LOOOOOVES the beach. Last time we were there she had a blast picking up sea shells. The last time we went last summer she got soaked and then rolled around in the sand. Fun for her- not fun for me to clean her up.

Maybe I have a bad attitude about it. Maybe this time it will be better.

We do have a “base of operations” this time. My brother in law’s apartment is across the street from the beach- literally. I guess if it is too horrible I could go hide there. Make hubby deal with the holy terror that is our toddler all by himself for a while. That would be entertaining to see. He hasn’t really been anywhere in public with her since he’s been back… or since she started screaming at the drop of a hat.

All I would really like to do is just lay/sit there and read. No distractions. That would be nice.

I know this “cheap” trip is inevitably going to cost us more than the nothing hubby claims it will be.  Its 50+ miles each way buddy = gas $!!

In the spirit of family fun I will suck it up and go. We haven’t done anything together in so long.

I will put on my happy “I love the beach” face.

I will spay sunscreen on everyone, more than once.

I will follow the toddler around while she picks up sea shells, and make sure she doesn’t step on or pick up anything icky, painful or decaying.

I will take pictures.

I will probably gawk at passers-by, they can be so entertaining sometimes.

I will hopefully get a break if a small someone takes a nap, as doubtful as that may be with all the excitement.

I will do my best to have a good time.

I will complain/vent about it tomorrow when if I don’t.

So it’s off to the beach for me!

woo. I still don’t sound excited. Do I?

I have a dream…..

I have a dream…..

– To live in a world where I can actually park the truck IN the garage.

– To live in a world where the unpacking is done and the garage just contains just garage stuff and not a hundred boxes of all kinds of stuff.

– To live in a world where everything has a place and everything is actaully in its place.

– To live in a world where I NEVER have to pack, unpack or move again.

– To live in a world where the children actually listen to what I say when I say it.

– To live in a world where I dont need to yell it when I say it.

~Wow I just had the weirdest Deja vu. Sorry for the interruption- now back to my dream….

– To live in a world where I can just run to the store to get something without having to schlep everyone with me.

– To live in a world where I can go on the beach reading a book- ALONE (even if its just for an hour)

– To live in a world where I can go get a mani, pedi and a haircut. Maybe all at the same time.

– To live in a world where my husband and I are in the same time zone for more than a day or two at a time.

– To live in a world where my husband is not only in the same time zone, but actually home home.

– To live in a world where the planets align and the universe lets me take a much needed child-free vacation with my hubby.

That is my dream today.  🙂

Yes, I’m a slacker…

I haven’t really been thinking a lot about blogging the last couple of weeks, as you can plainly see by my lack of posts. Yes, I admit it- I am a slacker.

Not that I’ve really been just sitting around slacking… well, a little bit maybe. But I’ve had other stuff going on.  I was sick for almost two weeks, my husband had his whirl-wind 24 hour visit, we’ve been school shopping, trying to unpack.. and just deal with the maniac 2-year-old.

Today, I realized that I needed to bloggity-blog-blog. I have about a hundred ideas of things that I want to write about. So many in fact that I actually made a list of topics so I wouldn’t forget.

But where to start is the question…

I should be headed to the airport to go to Alaska for my fabulous 5 day vacation with my husband right now.  Sigh. The universe seems to have had other plans for me this weekend. I guess it all works out okay since my mom ended up not being able to come this weekend to watch the kids after all.  It still makes me sad that I’m not going.  And hubby can’t come home until (maybe) next weekend- that is if they even let him since he is coming home for good the week after that. I’m keeping my fingers crossed.

So the whirl-wind 24 hour visit- Yea, that was great. Dont get me wrong- I LOOOOOOVED seeing him.  But his flight was 3 hours late… cutting down is 27 hour trip to 24.  He was supposed to get in at 9am, and didn’t actually get in until noon.   After we picked him up we just hung out at home.  Everyone took a nap… I made a nice dinner for him (after 2 trips to the store to get 2 things I forgot to buy) of pulled pork sliders, home-made onion rings and fresh corn on the cob.  He was very surprised by the meal.  K planned the menu.  They love the pulled pork- it’s quite delicious! You just cook the pork roast in root beer basically until it falls apart.

Here’s the recipe: http://allrecipes.com/Recipe/Slow-Cooker-Pulled-Pork/Detail.aspx

The recipe calls for 12 oz of root beer, but I usually dump the whole 2 liter in there. And just cook the crap out of it.  In the slow cooker 6-8 hours or on the stove about 3-4.  The actual “pulling” of the pork seriously grosses me out, so I wait until it pretty much does it on its own.  And i use the sweeter honey bbq sauce and it is delish!

Anyway- back from my pork tangent – we had a nice dinner and nice family time together. And then SUnday morning, we got up early… and headed to the OC. We had to run an errand for my brother-in-law(We’ll call him BIL for short)… we had to go to his apartment and get his birth certificate so he could apply to get his passport. Which is a WHOLE other saga that I will explain later.   So we first went to the airport so he could check in and get his exit row seat (I don’t know if I mentioned but my hubby is REALLY tall- 6′ 7”). He’s really uncomfortable in most planes, but the exit row seats are a little roomier. And you can’t just request one when you make the reservation or when you check-in online, so he has to wait until he gets to the airport to do it.   And the earlier the better!

So we did that and then went to Brother in law’s apartment. And since he lives literally 50 ft from the beach, we used our extra 45 minutes to go to the beach. The girls had fun. It was overcast and a little chilly… but they loved it. KT walked around picking up sea shells and putting them in her bucket. It was nice. I pretty much just followed her around the whole time making sure she dint touch anything gross or step on any glass.  I must say it was nice to have somewhere to clean up and pee. Normally the beach is not my fave place to go with the children. My dream is to just go to the beach and sit and read a book- ALONE. Ahhh…. that would be so nice.

Then it was time for hubby to get to the airport.   And then one of this flights got cancelled and it took him way longer to get back than planned. But he wasnt the only one.  BIL got stuck in Salt Lake City for the night… and then slept in and missed his flight Monday morning, and missed his job. So now they have made it a “Company Policy” that they HAVE to come home on early flights on Sundays so ensure everyone gets back in time to work. Which I totally get- but totally sucks- which is why he can’t come home this weekend.

Oh well…. this is getting really really long… And I could probably go on and on and on… Until next time..
